It also provides a little more protection because if your computer hard drive crashes then your data will not be compromised. You should look at your systems configuration. Many new computers have two hard drives in stalled. If that is the case then you do not really need the external one but it is still nice to have.

Windows Vista does have a built in data backup feature. The main issue with this is it does not provide a full data backup. If you can afford the 50 bucks then consider Acronis as it is one of the leading data backup software pieces on the web.
