Network Testing Software Serves A Profitable Purpose
Network Computing Inc. is putting the finishing touches on a slew of exploratory testing software due February 2007.
On the roster is LAN Exam, a network-inventory product, as well as LAN Page and LAN Alarm — two programs that page network managers when trouble arises.
LANExam, a module that works with the company's existing LANAlert Network Monitoring Softwares, collects hardware and software configuration data for servers and nodes on a NetWare network, said president of the Dallas firm.
Data collected by LANExam is stored in a Structured Query Language database that tracks all changes made to node and server configurations. LANExam can also be configured to conduct point-to-point tests between nodes to check their performance and operation.
In addition, the Network Monitoring Softwares analyzes the operation of LAN drivers, IPX, SPX, and the NetWare shell. It comes with a mapping capability that automatically discovers nodes and servers on a network and draws them on an OpenView console. LAN administrators can access inventory history by simply clicking on a node icon, and trouble spots will show up in different colors.
The company also is readying LANPage Gateway and LANAlarm Console. The server-based gateway software sends LANAlert alarms to a pager. LANAlarm Console notifies LAN managers even at remote sites.
One reseller, who beta tested the Network Monitoring Softwares , said he needs a tool that lets him manage clients' networks remotely. LANAlarm and LANPage allows to manage customer's networks from their office said president of Computer Applications, of Huntington Beach, Calif. Network Monitoring Softwares can see what's happening before it becomes a problem or causes an emergency.
To make the Network Monitoring Softwares connection to the host computer, a dedicated PC at the host site is used. This PC functions as a front-end to the host mainframe system, providing proper monitoring to SDLC translation functions, access control and status display. Up to 32 concurrent PCs are supported by one Network Monitoring Software Multiple Network Monitoring Softwares can be installed for support of additional PCs.
The network testing software provides complete SNA support, including 128 concurrent LUs. PCs operate as fully functional intelligent workstations under all major SNA protocols. Complete SDLC-type error checking is performed on all Network Monitoring Software transmissions. Network Monitoring Software connects to the front of the IBM 37X5 front-end communications processor which in turn connects to the mainframe.
